Sonya Scott’s most recent exhibition is inspired by dripstones which were used in ships at the turn of the 18th century as a method of filtering and purifying water. They were quickly abandoned when it was apparent that dripstones removed only visual impurities and not bacteria. Scott considers how our personal methods of filtration are similarly useless. In challenging and joyful situations alike we attempt to alter our physicality or gestures in an attempt to disguise any number of things for any number of reasons. Try as we might, our filters expressed through hand gestures or body movements only serve to remove the sediment of our emotions not the essence of them.
