RUN LMC Collection by Laila Marie Costa
12 – 29th July 2017
Opening Drinks – Wednesday 12th of July 6-8pm
FREE Demonstration on micro mosaics – Saturday 29th July 12pm
The RUN LMC collection is a throw back to the analogue past of mixed tapes and ghetto blasters. The reels and guides that are the basis of the jewellery are mined from the internal components of band ‘demo’ cassette tapes that were salvaged from an iconic Melbourne live music venue.
The necklaces and earrings are made from sterling silver, cassette tape components and guitar string ball ends. As an artist and musician, LMC looks to her everyday urban life and the waste produced to collect the materials to repurpose into wearable and non–wearable creations. The materials inform the design process, its form and rhythm.
Earlier this year, LMC studied micro mosaic using glass filati at Ravenna and Venice as part of a Fellowship to enhance her practice and plug into her Italian artisinal heritage. This dying art form is highly labour intensive and the filati mosaics traditionally become part of jewellery pieces. Coloured Venetian glass is hand pulled over a flame to produce filaments that are cut into segments and placed in a stucco substrate.
The artist will be demonstrating this micro mosaic technique and the work produced at an artists’ talk on the last Saturday of the exhibition, 29 July at 12pm.
