Studio 20/17 is pleased to present their annual winter exhibition Very Simple Proofs, The Trivial Ring. In previous years, jewellers have explored the notion of the brooch, and toyed with the idea of a neckpiece. This year jewellers from Australia and New Zealand will take on the infinite possibilities of the ‘ring’.
One exhibiting artist, Vernon Bowden will install a gold ring directly into the gallery wall. The viewer will be allowed to place their finger directly into the ring and by doing so afford themselves the chance of ‘wearing’ the building but as questions start to arise, you wonder, is this all he is saying?
As most of us well know the English language can be rather ambiguous. In playing up this ambiguity, these jewellers investigate their understanding of and to question the importance, significance or relevance of the ‘ring’? New Zealand jeweller Sharon Fitness says of her work ‘They are things that don’t really look like rings, but things that fingers know are meant for them to go in’.
This show is a wonderful examination of a traditional and historical piece of jewellery and will be sure to show a poignant and occasionally humours look into the minds of 12 established and emerging jewellers exploring the notion of the ‘ring’.
Exhibiting jewellers include, Bridget Kennedy, Helena Boguki, Inari Kiuru, Jasmine Matus, Karin Findeis, Marina Antoniou, Melanie Ihnen, Michelle Taylor, Nadine Carr, Sharon Fitness, Vernon Bowden and Zoe Brand.
