Winter Brooches is Studio 20/17’s annual celebration of the brooch. This year 22 jewellers from Australia and New Zealand at different stages of their careers have been invited to exhibit. The work in the exhibition presents a dynamic snapshot not only of contemporary jewellery practice but also of the significance of the brooch as a means of expression.
The brooch is perhaps one of the most expressive and indeed functional jewellery pieces of all. It performs its functions culturally, socially and personally. Although often worn simply for adornment the brooch is also often a messenger. Its messages can be loud and bold a dialogue between the maker, the wearer and the viewer; or subtle and discreet – perhaps just a dialogue between the maker and the wearer. The brooch functions as decoration and can also be a crucial implement for holding garments together. It can be small or enormous, but always carries its stories with it.
