my minute necklace by Radka Passianova sitting in a pile on a flat surface

THE PLINTH PROJECT – Radka Passianova

Location:  Gallery Lane Cove Library Plinth, opposite 165 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove
Date/Time:  Friday 10th July – Thursday 23rd July, 2026

“My Minute” is an installation created for the exhibition Girls On Time by tenmoregirls. The work explores ideas of time, wasted time, and the preciousness of free time. Visually inspired by fish eggs, it reflects my personal experience of valuing time spent outdoors and being away from work-related stress—as the most meaningful and restorative. The work consists of a chain constructed from 352 hand-made copper links, taking a total of 3,720 minutes to complete. Each link represents approximately 9.63 minutes of my time, materialising focused labour invested in a project I love, yet one that simultaneously takes me away from leisure and everyday relief. Visitors were invited to “buy my time” by purchasing individual links, selecting how much of my free time they wished to take. The installation becomes an evidence of how much time was not taken, yet might have been if offered freely. The work can be installed on a wall, floor, or plinth, displayed as a pile or suspended chain of accumulated time. Originally blackened with liver of sulphur, the copper continues to develop patina through handling and environment, reinforcing ideas of time, change, and accumulation.

Radka Passianova is a contemporary jeweller and object maker whose practice is grounded in silversmithing, material exploration, and the expressive potential of making. Working primarily in metal while also experimenting with new materials, she uses her practice to investigate themes of memory, movement, and personal transformation.

Drawing on lived experiences, including travel, place, and moments of quiet observation, Radka creates wearable and tactile forms that carry narrative and emotional resonance. Her work sits between jewellery and object, exploring interaction, wearability, and subtle kinetic qualities. She is particularly interested in how materials retain traces of time and experience, inviting reflection through form, surface, and movement.

Each piece evolves through a process of technical experimentation and conceptual inquiry, resulting in finely crafted works that balance material sensitivity with thoughtful storytelling.

THE PLINTH PROJECT – Peter Burgess

“Letter for Mr. Cooper”, 2024, is a work comprising 2 A4 sheets of lead. One is folded in the shape of an envelope and the other folded as a single sheet of letter paper. There is more than one way to tell a story, and most stories have more than one possible ending. The work ‘Letter for Mr. Cooper’, is intended to operate as a reworking of a common domestic object, asking it (in this particular case, an envelope and sheet of paper) to speak to an inbuilt history. By using the simulacra of an everyday object, it is hoped to retrace the trajectory of an object’s innate history. This mundane object has the potential to instill terror (depending on context). Or not. Letters have been used in terrorist attacks such as those of the Unabomber and yet also to deliver a ‘Dear John’ screed. That’s the thing about potential. Anything could happen. From our sense of familiarity with ordinary objects, it is hoped to stretch the band of associated meanings and pose more questions than answers. This work specifically references the lethal UK letter bombs sent by Miles Cooper in the early 2000’s.

Peter Burgess is a Sydney-based visual artist whose practice spans drawing, printmaking, photography and object making. For more than four decades, he has explored how ordinary objects carry hidden histories, political significance and emotional resonance. His work reimagines familiar forms and materials, inviting audiences to look again at the everyday and question the stories embedded within it. Burgess studied architecture before completing art studies in Australia and a Master of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in New York. He has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including at Documenta 8 in Germany and The Decade Show in New York.

terra suburbia – a group of personalities assembled from the sea-tumbled building materials that appear under my feet while walking along the shore near my home on Dharawal Country.  As I gather this enigmatic drift matter washed ashore in the dark of night, I observe the slow erosion of the shoreline. Here the ocean is slowly reclaiming the debris of suburbia that tenuously clings to its edges and spitting it out again. Playful at first glance, terra suburbia resonates with the tensions and complexities that underpin contemporary Australia.
Melinda Young (@unnaturaljeweller) lives and works on Dharawal Country. Her research-based craft practice reflects experiences of being in and understanding place, underpinned by complexities of place-based making in contemporary Australia. She is interested in materiality – the traces of human and non-human interactions left behind on the body and the land, working with the narratives inherent in gleaned or re-purposed materials.

Exhibiting extensively in Australia and internationally since 1997, her work is held in public collections and included in numerous publications. Melinda has spent the past 25 years working within the contemporary craft and design field as an educator, curator and writer. She has a Master of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts and is currently undertaking a cross-disciplinary PhD in Human Geography and Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong. Melinda is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Art and Design, Faculty of Arts Design and Architecture, UNSW.
